New issue of the Wendelstein Newsletter

Information around and about the Wendelstein 7-X fusion device

August 24, 2017

The Wendelstein 7-X Newsletter reports on current developments throughout the Wendelstein 7-X fusion experiment. The latest edition (14/2017) presents the new alkali metal beam diagnostic installed in Wendelstein 7-X after the first experimentation phase.

The new measuring facility is to observe, for example, density profiles and turbulence at the edge of the Wendelstein plasma. This is done by injecting a beam of fast lithium or sodium atoms with about one milliampere into the edge, where the atoms are ionized in the hot plasma. The characteristic light emitted by the excited ions then provides the necessary information on the states present in the plasma edge.

The diagnostic was developed and built by research scientists at Wigner Research Centre for Physics in Budapest. It will be used in plasma experiments in Wendelstein 7-X on resumption of operation after shutdown.
