January 10, 2018

Professor Dr. Sibylle Günter, Scientific Director of Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) at Garching and Greifswald has been appointed corresponding member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW.

SATW acts as a politically independent, non-commercial network of personalities and organisations from science and industry. Its objective is to identify relevant technological developments and inform the political and social spheres about their importance and consequences. SATW comprises about 340 individual members and 50 member organisations. Persons of outstanding merit in the technological and scientific spheres abroad qualify as corresponding members.

After study of physics at Rostock and guest research in the USA Sibylle Günter joined Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in 1996. IPP is concerned with the physical principles for a fusion power plant, which, like the sun, is to derive energy from fusion of light atomic nuclei. In 2000 Sibylle Günter was appointed Scientific Member of Max Planck Society and head of IPP’s Tokamak Theory Division, and in 2011 she was appointed Scientific Director of IPP and Chairperson of the Board of Directors. She is apl Professor at the University of Rostock and Honorary Professor at the Technical University of Munich as well as member of the German Academy of Engineering Sciences (Acatech) and Academia Europaea.

Since January she has been a corresponding member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences. She is to be presented with her certification at the Academy’s next members’ assembly in May 2018.
