Rostock
The hanseatic town Rostock is situated in north-eastern Germany on the Baltic coast and the bancs of the river Warnow. The town was founded in 1218 by German traders. The rise of the city began with its membership on the Hanseatic League. In the 14th century it was a powerful seaport town and in 1419 the University of Rostock was founded as the oldest university in Northern Europe. Today, Rostock has nearly 200 000 inhabitants and is the largest city in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
