2006: IPP Summer University for Plasma Physics

25 - 29 September 2006 in Garching

The course will cover the main aspects of plasma physics with emphasis on nuclear fusion. The following lectures will be offered:
  • basic plasma physics
  • basics of nuclear fusion
  • kinetic theory and magneto-hydrodynamics
  • concepts and optimization of tokamaks and stellarators
  • plasma heating and diagnostics
  • experimental results in tokamaks and stellarators
  • plasma wall interaction and wall materials
  • astrophysical plasmas
  • safety and environmental aspects of fusion
  • inertial fusion
  • ITER and the next steps towards a reactor.

The course will include a visit to the large fusion device ASDEX Upgrade and laboratories for plasma facing materials research and the developing facilities for high-power negative ion beam heating.

Conference venue is the Garching site of the Max-Planck Institut für Plasmaphysik located at the Garching research campus near Munich.

One goal of the Summer University is to promote an exchange of views among the coming generation of European scientists. An opportunity for discussions with lecturers and the other students will be provided in an evening session and during an excursion to the surroundings of Munich.

The course is being held for European physics students who have passed their basic courses and have not yet started a doctoral (PhD) thesis. The lectures will be presented in English, lecture notes will be provided to all students at the begin of the summer university. The cost of accommodation will be covered, and subsidies for food will be granted. Limited funds are available for travel expenses. The course is limited to 60 participants.

The deadline for applications is May 31, 2006. Required documents include a high school leaving certificate, evidence of basic physics study and a short curriculum vitae. Applicants will be notified as of mid July 2006.
