IPP is conducting at Garching the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak, Germany's largest fusion device. The Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, successor of Wendelstein 7-AS (Garching, till July 2002 ) is being built at the Greifswald Branch Institute of IPP.
The "Plasma-facing Materials and Components" project is concerned with producing and further developing new materials for fusion devices. The project "Theoretical Plasma Physics" is devoted to first-principle based model developments. The "Energy and System Studies" are investigating the role of fusion power in the future energy system.
