The Central Library at Garching and the division libraries at Garching and Greifswald are special scientific and technical libraries with the major areas: plasma physics, surface physics, mathematics and information technology.

The Central Library at Garching is located in building D2A and can be used by IPP personnel and the scientific facilities at Garching research site. Monographs and journals are openly displayed. Reports and older journal volumes are kept in the store of the Central Library, but can be taken out at any time on request. Many journals are also available online. The Central Library developed from the original reference library to a lending library. The reference restriction now only applies to journals, which cannot be borrowed but can be consulted in the reading room of the Central Library.

The Division Libraries are lending libraries for personnel of the divisions.

The Division Library of the Greifswald branch of IPP is located in building 10, 2nd floor, and can likewise be used by any member of staff. It is also a lending library (expect for journals). In order to cater quickly to the literature needs of its users, the Greifswald library itself handles all orders through the local book trade and the interlending service. It also attends to the formal processing of publications on the spot. Furthermore, it maintains close cooperation with Garching and the Joint Library Association.

The Administration Library of IPP at Garching comprises the management´s library and the various department libraries of the administration, security, public relations and the Staff Representative Council. It stocks monographs, subscription series and journals in the fields of law, administration and research organisation. These stocks can be borrowed by IPP personnel.
