Time lapse: Assembly of Wendelstein 7-X
October 2009 till May 2011
Construction of the Wendelstein 7-X fusion device at Greifswald is progressing. In the experimentation hall five almost structurally identical pre-assembled modules are being joined together on the foundation of the device to form a ring. Assembly work in the hall from October 2009 till May 2011 is shown in a seven-minute time lapse film:
Module 1, enclosed in mounting frames, is installed on the foundation in its waiting position in the foreground. The bottom half of the cryostat sheath for module 5 is deposited on the foundation, and the module prepared on the assembly rig front right is inserted. Module 4 is installed in the meanwhile vacated assembly rig, and module 5 is enclosed with the top half of the cryostat sheath. The ports for measuring instruments, heating facilities and pumps are now incorporated.
The bottom half of the cryostat sheath for module 1 is put in place, module 1 is inserted in the sheath from its waiting position and placed in its final position on the foundation and the top half of the cryostat sheath is put on.
The bottom half of the cryostat sheath for module 4 is put in place, module 4 is inserted in the sheath from its position in the assembly rig and placed in its final position on the foundation. Then the top half of the cryostat sheath is put on. While at module 1 in the foreground assembly of the ports for measuring instruments, heating facilities and pumps is in full swing, module 4 is covered with the top half of the cryostat sheath.
The bottom half of the cryostat sheath for module 2 is put in place, module 2 is inserted in the sheath and placed in its final position on the foundation. The top half of the cryostat sheath is put on.
Thus, four of the five modules
are now placed in their final position.
