DESCRIPTION: Polarized beams and targets are an important tool in nuclear p
 hysics to study the spin dependence of nuclear forces at accelerators such
  as COSY@FZ Jülich. For this reason\, various polarization methods have b
 een developed in recent decades for hydrogen\, deuterium and helium-3\, wh
 ich are now also used in other fields. This knowledge could be used\, for 
 example\, in the generation of energy by nuclear fusion\, as the cross-sec
 tions of the various fusion reactions are also strongly spin-dependent. Th
 is could considerably increase the energy yield or significantly reduce op
 erating costs\, for example by influencing the trajectory of the neutrons.
  Until then\, however\, some fundamental questions still need to be answer
 ed. In this talk\, some classical polarization methods as well as new appr
 oaches are discussed and the current state of research on “polarized nuc

DESCRIPTION:Atomic-scale microscopy has been a game changer for advancing m
 aterials science over the last century\, from identifying and manipulating
  crystal structures to watching molecules move in real-time. Many physicis
 ts and engineers are not aware of the complex and fascinating design decis
 ions that go into the creation of each microscope\, which can lead to subo
 ptimal usage\, misunderstood results\, and a missed opportunity to better 
 appreciate the equipment. In this talk\, I will discuss key physics princi
 ples that go into one of the most common types of atomic-resolution micros
 copes\, the atomic force microscope (AFM). I will contextualise all of the
 se concepts by relating them to the novel\, low-temperature\, high-vacuum 
 AFM that I re-designed and re-built specifically to measure the electrosta
