2-day workshop for up to 12 PhD candidates or postdocs on entitled “Time and Self-Management” comprising of topics from the “menu” below

Workshop Menu.
Below is a list of possible workshop discussion topics / modules. The purpose of the menu is
to establish areas of focus and starting points. The reason for having so many menu items is
to stimulate ideas and make sure all aspects are covered. Different menu items can be
combined to form your ideal workshop.
Personal:
1. Gaining self-confidence (you CAN do it!)
2. Personal grounding (self-deception and gaining an accurate self-image)
3. Defining your boundaries (not wasting time and effort)
4. Showing weakness (it this bad?)
5. Seeing what you expect (idea reinforcement)
6. Being assertive (but not obnoxious)
7. Decision making (becoming more decisive)
8. Remaining positive (seeing the good in everything)
9. Being self-critical (not getting overwhelmed)
10. Finding sources of support (not getting overwhelmed)
11. Maintaining innovation (ways of stimulating creativity)
Communication:
12. Good communication (how to ensure it)
13. Managing expectations (eliminating nasty surprises)
14. Voicing criticism (constructively)
15. Questioning styles (getting accurate information)
16. Empathising (methods and benefits)
17. Persuading others (gaining agreement)
18. When and how to give advice (without negative impact)
19. Presenting to the public / people outside research (TED style)
Team dynamics:
20. Motivating teams and individuals (ways to motivate others)
21. Successful negotiation (useful negotiating rules)
22. Delegation (successful assignment of tasks)
23. How friendly? (being friends with students or supervisors?)
24. Team building (what makes a team)
25. Disparity in power or intelligence (the dangers)
26. Rules, equality and fairness (is “equal” fair and/or effective?)
27. Gender Differences (in language use and other areas)
28. Cultural differences (in attitudes)
29. Being a role model (leading not telling)
