Postdocs contribute significantly to the scientific output of IPP and are therefore an extremely valuable personnel ressource. They are employed on fixed-term contracts in order to ensure that young scientists will always have a chance to attempt a career in science. Only 20-30% of our postdocs stay at IPP, all others pursue a career path elsewhere, some in academics, most in industry.

It is increasingly difficult to attract excellent young scientists to start their career in the scientific environment. In accordance with the MPG postdoc guidelines, which state that ‚The purpose of the postdoc phase is also to clarify the future career path‘, IPP will set up a career development center for postdocs at both sites, Greifswald and Garching.

Financially supported by the HGF for the next 5 years, the Career Center (CC) is intended to help young scientists to become aware of their own strengths and interests, enabling them to better plan their career.

The aim of the CC is twofold: (1) Provide optimal conditions for postdocs to pursue their individual careers both inside and outside IPP. (2) Increase attractiveness of IPP as good employer for young scientists.

The main elements of the planned CC are career conversations, career counselling, advanced training or personal qualification offers, a mentoring programme, and information taylored for postdocs. The quality of all measures which are offered in the CC will be monitored continuously via systematic feedback.

The platform of the IPP colloquium has been chosen to inform all interested employees about the purpose and the planned elements of the career center for postdocs, which will start in January 2020.
