This time our visitors are a couple, Beata Tyburska-Pueschel and M.J. Pueschel,
who got to know each other while doing their PhDs at
IPP, and since then have faced the 'dual-career challenge'.
Beata currently leads the Ion Beam Laboratory at the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research in Eindhoven.
After obtaining her PhD for research on deuterium and tritium retention in tungsten tiles in fusion reactors
conducted at IPP, she changed her focus to fission reactor materials during her work as post-doc and then scientist
at the University of Wisconsin. Her next career stop brought her to Cologne, Germany, where she conducted
materials research in zero gravity at the Deutsche Luft- und Raumfahrt, leading a young investigator's group.
Starting her present position in the Netherlands in 2019 marked her return to fusion materials.
Beata's spouse M.J. ("Em Jay") graduated with his IPP-based PhD on turbulence in fusion plasmas, followed by a
post-doc at IPP/MPSS with a strong space plasma component. While his primary focus has remained fusion plasmas,
he has kept one leg in the space/astro-plasma field during his work at the University of Wisconsin (first as
post-doc, then as scientist) and at the University of Texas (as scientist, working remotely while living in
Cologne). Since 2020, he has been leading the Plasma Micro-Turbulence group at the Dutch Institute for
Fundamental Energy Research while teaching at universities in Eindhoven and Bochum.
