Job offer from August 09, 2024

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which - like the sun - generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within the department ITER Technology & Diagnostics (ITED) a position for a Mechanical Engineer (m/f/d) for the Development of the Neutral Beam Source. As a member of the Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) team at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Garching, the candidate will contribute to the development of RF-driven negative ion sources for heating the plasma of fusion experiments (i.e. ITER) up to 100 million Kelvin. He/she will provide technical support to the NBI test facilities BATMAN Upgrade and ELISE at the IPP by implementing test bed upgrades, source modifications and diagnostic improvements. The work will be carried out in Garching together with the IPP NBI team.

Your tasks

  • Ensure the reliable operation of the test facilities ELISE and BATMAN Upgrade with all subsystems such as vacuum pumps, cooling system
  • Carry out upgrades of the test beds, such as source modifications, diagnostic improvements or other test bed equipment, in particular:
    • Design of modified and new components, including structural, thermal and fluid dynamic calculations;
    • Manage the procurement of components either from industry or in-house manufacturing;
    • Supervise assembly and installation and assist in the commissioning of these components;
  • Write technical reports and present them at meetings and conferences;
