The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which - like the sun - generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within the division Tokamak Scenario Development (E1) at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade a position for a Senior Engineer (m/f/d) with focus on mechanical design and construction tasks.

Your tasks

  • Upgrading and optimization of mechanical components for fusion devices
  • Dimensioning of components with high electro-mechanical and thermal loads by means of finite element method (available tool Ansys)
  • Construction of components and diagnostics
  • Preparation of technical specifications and interfaces, and monitoring of fabrication
  • Analysis of requirements and operational conditions

Your profile

  • Completed studies (university, master's degree) in engineering, specializing in mechanical, electrical or nuclear engineering, doctorate desirable but not a prerequisite
  • Experience with design and construction of mechanical components

Your abilities

  • Knowledge of fusion technology or aerospace technology
  • Experience with industrial grade scientific projects
  • Ability to fluently present complex scientific and technical matters in German and English
  • Enthusiasm to work in science
  • Willingness to join an international team

The position is permanent. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 14 according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund).
