ESF Exploratory Workshop

ESF Exploratory Workshop on Multi-Scale Methods for Wave and Transport Processes in Fusion Plasmas: The Legacy of Grigory Pereverzev

13 - 16 October 2013

Convenors

  • Prof. Eric Sonnendrücker
  • Dr. Clemente Angioni
  • Dr. Emiliano Fable
  • Dr. Omar Maj

Scope

Computational plasma physics is driving the interest of numerical and applied mathematicians for a variety of difficult problems. Here, we consider multi-scale problems emerging from plasma waves and transport processes, with the aim of transferring recent mathematical results to fusion plasma physics and applications, and, vice versa, proposing to the mathematical community some interesting problems.

Dedication

Grigory Pereverzev contributed to the understanding of waves and transport processes with influental, seminal works such as the paraxial WKB method and the ASTRA transport code. His work provides the starting point for our investigation of both high-frequency wave and transport theory.

The workshop is dedicated to the memory of Grigory V. Pereverzev.

Topics

We shall explore mathematical methods and numerical schemes for different problems of plasma physics all characterized by the existence of multiple scales.

  • Semiclassical limit for high-frequency (Gaussian) wave beams
  • Semiclassical solution of wave equations with a non-Hermitian principal symbol : cyclotron resonances in magnetized plasma
  • Transport of energy by high-frequency wave modes
  • Effects of turbulence on wave beams
  • Effects of electron cyclotron current drive and fast-electrons on transport
  • Stiff transport models
  • Anisotropic and hybrid models in transport and asymptotic-preserving schemes
  • Gyrokinetic simulation and coupling to transport codes

Format of the workshop

The workshop is funded by the European Science Foundation (ESF) under the action "Exploratory Workshop EW12-031". Exploratory workshops are small meetings bringing together a selected group of experts from different European countries with the aim of assessing the possibility of new research strategies for challenging open problems. The ideal outcome of the meeting is the formation of a basis for further collaborations between the participants and their institutions, thus strengthening the relationships among European research institutes.

Due to the strong programmatic character of the meeting, the participation to the workshop is on invitation only.
