Garching near Munich is in the northern part of the rural district of Munich in the administrative district (Regierungsbezirk) Upper Bavaria. Garching's population is about 16,000 residents. Its altitude is 481 m above sea-level. The roots of Garching are dated back to the beginning of the tenth century. The urban district Forschungsinstitute started with the construction and the completion of the first German research reactor of the Technische Universität München in 1957. The Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik (IPP) in Garching is concerned with investigating the physical principles underlying a nuclear fusion power plant, which – like the sun – will gain energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. IPP Garching operates two large-scale experiments, ASDEX Upgrade and Wendelstein 7-X, in which the conditions are investigated, which will allow sustained fusion reactions in a hot ionised gas – a plasma.
