Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik was founded in 1960 in Garching. Here it has some 700 members of staff.
The ASDEX Upgrade tokamak is operated here. Presently, in Garching are the five Scientific Divisions Tokamak Scenario Development, Plasma Edge and Wall, Tokamak Theory, Numerical Methods in Plasma Physics, and ITER Technology & Diagnostics.
Furthermore, IPP hosts EUROfusion, the "European Consortium for the Development of Fusion Energy".
IPP and the Technical University of Munich have a cooperation agreement in the field of fusion-oriented plasma physics: Two Scientific Members of IPP are also appointed as professors at the university.
