Prof. Dr. Michael Kaufmann

Emeritus Scientific Member (1939 - 2020)


Michael Kaufmann was born on 7 January 1939 in Hildesheim. He studied physics at the Technical University of Hannover and at the Freie Universität in Berlin. He was awarded his degree in 1964 and took his PhD at the Technical University of Munich three years later.

In 1978 he was appointed Scientific Fellow of the Max Planck Society and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics. He was Honorary Professor at the University of Bayreuth and a member of the "Deutscher Wissenschaftsrat". He was co-chairman of the "International Fusion Research Committee" (IFRC) at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and member of the "Scientific and Technical Committee" (STC), an advisory board of Euratom. Michael Kaufmann retired in 2007.
