18th International Workshop on Hydrogen Isotopes in Fusion Reactor Materials (HWS-18)

  • Beginn: 25.05.2026
  • Ende: 28.05.2026

On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee and the International Program Committee, we are pleased to invite you to the 18th International Workshop on Hydrogen Isotopes in Fusion Reactor Materials (HWS-18), in the Abbey of Frauenwörth in southern Germany from May 25 to 28 May, 2026.

This workshop is a satellite meeting of the 27th International Conference on Plasma Surface Interaction in Controlled Fusion Devices (PSI-27) which is taking place in Regensburg the week before. Both events are hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP Garching).

Following the tradition of the series, the workshop is intended as a platform for experts in the field to present and discuss the latest scientific results regarding:

- Hydrogen isotope recycling, migration, retention, and release from fusion reactor materials and co-deposited layers.

- Tritium removal techniques.

- Influence of plasma impurities and seeded impurities on fuel retention.

- Influence of neutron damage on hydrogen retention in materials.

The aim is to bring together experiments and modelling of hydrogen isotope interactions with fusion reactor materials. To fulfil its scope as a workshop, ample time for discussion will be provided. The workshop will be held at the Abbey of Frauenwörth which is located on the small island of ‚Fraueninsel‘, situated in the beautiful surroundings of lake Chiemsee, 70 km south-east of Munich. We are convinced that the venue will provide ideal conditions for scientific exchange.

The meeting is planned to start on the afternoon of Monday, May 25 and end at noon on Thursday May 28 to allow participants for convenient arrival and departure. The site is accessible via public transport from Munich and Salzburg within two hours. Shuttle busses from to Munich airport can be arranged if necessary. This reduces the travel time to e.g. Munich airport well below two hours. More details you will soon find here on the left.

To encourage interaction and discussion outside the lecture hall, one afternoon is reserved for a boat trip to the nearby ‚Herreninsel‘ island , home to one of King Ludwig II's famous castles. Details see here.

The registration fee includes the workshop, accommodation in the abbey, all meals in the ‘Klosterwirt’ and the outing, so participants will not have to organize anything for these four days. To encourage also young career scientists to attend, we will try to keep the registration fee as low as possible. Details will follow soon but we are aim at € 550,-.

We invite you to submit an abstract for the workshop by sending an email to hws-18@ipp.mpg.de

If you would like to add an additional recipient to this email distribution list, please also write to hws-18@ipp.mpg.de.

We would be very greatful if you could download and distribute the flyer to your colleagues.

We are counting on your participation and your scientific contribution to make HWS-18 a resounding success!

Best regards,

Thomas Schwarz-Selinger on behalf of the Local Organizing Committee and
 the International Program Committee
