The goal of this Master’s thesis was the design and characterization of a cooling system for the experiment GIRAFFE. The cooling system has challenging requirements, and the literature does not provide an example of a cooling technique able to meet all of them at once. The system must be able to cool a tungsten sample (fibre of diameter 5–16 µm) down to −100 ◦C without contact, without cooling the sample holder, and in a vacuum. Furthermore, the system must be removable from outside the vacuum vessel to free up space around the sample.
