IPP Summer University for Plasma Physics and Fusion Research

Frequently asked questions

To whom is the Summer University addressed?

IPP Summer University is intended for students studying at European universities who have not yet started a PhD. Since the lectures are designed to cover fusion physics in one week, they are obviously not for specialists but are rather general.

How are applicants selected?

The selection criteria are certificate grades and your CV. It is advantageous, but not necessary, if applicants can indicate their interest in plasma or fusion physics.

Can PhD students attend the Summer University?

This is possible, but then they have to pay their accommodation expenses themselves. If you also want to participate in the social activities (welcome reception, daily lunch, excursion with dinner), we charge roughly 50 to 70 euros.

I am not European, but I am studying at a university in Europe. Is it possible for me to apply to the programme?

Yes, you can apply for the Summer University. Please register at our web site.

I am studying in a non-European country. Can I attend the Summer University?

A limited number of students from non-European countries can take part in the Summer University. If selected, you can participate but you (or your institute/university) have to pay the expenses.

What is the procedure for submitting certificates?

If certificates are not already in English or German, the applicant has to provide a translation of the relevant parts. The translation can be done by the applicant. Please make sure that there are grades on your certificates as a basis for selecting candidates.

I shall not receive my certificate till after the application deadline. What can I do?

In this case you may still apply if you can submit the certificate before mid-July. Please state in the application when you can send us the certificate.

When shall I get information on the status of my application?

The application deadline is the end of May. We shall then process applications and inform you whether you have been selected or not. Usually you will be notified before the end of July.

When is the participation fee due?

In the mail announcing your selection you will be asked to send 50 euros by bank transfer as participation fee. This fee serves to acknowledge your intention to participate. The fee is non-refundable.

Is a participation certificate issued at the end of the Summer University?

Yes.
