ITER Diagnostics Group

The ITER diagnostics group is developing two diagnostics for the international fusion experiment ITER from the design to commissioning.

ITER bolometry: The bolometers measure the total power radiated by the plasma in a wide wavelength range. Using multiple lines of sight and applying algorithms for tomographic reconstruction the spatial distribution of the source of the radiation can be determined.

ITER pressure gauges: This diagnostic measures the neutral gas pressure in multiple locations in the divertor, main chamber and the pump ducts. It is needed both for scientific investigations as well as plasma control.

Both diagnostics are based on designs developed and patented by IPP since the 1980s for ASDEX and ASDEX Upgrade. Ever since further development has continued.  The developments for ITER are carried out in close cooperation with the ITER Organisation and Fusion for Energy. Design and sensor development are mostly completed. IPP plans to further support the manufacture of these diagnostics as well as their commissioning on ITER. Also, we support the implementation of bolometers and manometers at other experiments planned or under construction.
