New Administrative Director at IPP

Susanne Russell successor to Dr. Josef Schweinzer

January 31, 2022

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) has a new Administrative Director: Susanne Russell took up her new position on 1st January 2022. She succeeds Dr. Josef Schweinzer, who has been managing the IPP in Garching and Greifswald since 2014. Susanne Russell, born in 1963 in Neuenkirchen in the Lüneburg Heath, already knows the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics well: since 2018, she has supported the management as a freelance interim manager in modernising the administration. Her expertise in commercial corporate management and process optimisation, human resources and in the field of digitalisation had already taken Susanne Russell to scientific institutions before, as well as to a wide range of industrial and service companies for which she worked.

Her predecessor, Dr. Josef Schweinzer, an experimental physicist, is returning to science. Since the beginning of January, he has been heading the new, cross-divisional project "International Tokamak Collaboration" at IPP Garching. It coordinates and organises IPP's participation in the international tokamak experiments, which are designed and operated on a collaborative scientific basis. A special focus is on the fusion devices JET in Culham, UK, JT-60SA in Naka, Japan, as well as on the international experimental reactor ITER in Cadarache, southern France.
