The Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik (IPP) in Garching is concerned with investigating the physical principles underlying a nuclear fusion power plant, which – like the sun – will gain energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. For this in both large-scale experiments ASDEX Upgrade and Wendelstein 7-X the conditions are investigated which will allow fusion reactions in a hot ionized gas – a plasma.
