Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Garching

Type of Job

Scientist

Particle, Plasma and Quantum Physics

Job Code: 25/027

Job offer from July 15, 2025

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) is one of the world"s leading centers for fusion research. With around 1100 dedicated employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald, we are committed to exploring the fundamental principles of fusion power plants. These power plants generate energy without climate-damaging emissions, are safe, sustainable and nearly limitless - just like the sun. Fusion power plants have the potential to play an important role in supplying energy to future generations.

At the IPP site in Garching we are conducting research on the large-scale experiment ASDEX Upgrade. This is a fusion plant of the world-famous tokamak type.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers an opportunity to participate in a postdoctorate programme within the division Plasma Dynamics (PD) to perform research activities at the ASDEX Upgrade fusion experiment (AUG). We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Experimental Physics (m/f/d).

Your tasks

  • Investigate plasma toroidal current ramp-up, in particular the temporal evolution of the radial distribution of the current density
  • Operation and enhancement of the far infrared (FIR) interferometry/polarimetry diagnostic for determination of the toroidal current density profile
  • Develop and maintain suitable control systems for communication and setup of the aforementioned diagnostic devices

Your profile

  • PhD in experimental physics or electrical engineering
  • Knowledge of high temperature plasma physics
  • Experience and knowledge of FIR technology and/or wave propagation in refractive media (preferably plasmas)

Your abilities

  • experience in programming of application software with Python
  • ability to present complex scientific and technical issues in English and German
  • interest to work in a scientific environment and with an international team

We offer

  • An interesting job at one of the largest research institutes for fusion research
