Pellets

Pellets are small cubes of solid hydrogen ice accelerated up to several hundred metres per second and then injected into the plasma.

The temperature of the pellets is about 12 K (- 260o C). A pellet is evaporating within about 1 ms along its path inside the plasma. Pellets are used to re-fuel and to probe the plasma. The picture shows this comet like pellet ablation in the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (upper left), the radiative region at the bottom is the divertor.
