Neutral beam injection on ASDEX Upgrade and Wendelstein 7-X

Both of IPP’s  fusion experiments are equipped with or currently installing powerful neutral beam injection systems that work with sources of positive ions.

ASDEX Upgrade has two neutral beam injectors, equipped with four neutral beam sources each and delivering a combined heating power of 20 MW. The two injectors operate at slightly different particle energies in deuterium of 60 and 93 keV, respectrively. Two of the beams are tangential to the plasma for increased current drive efficiency.

On Wendelstein 7-X a largely identical system is currently under construction that will initially be equipped with four sources delivering a maximum power of 10 MW.
