This Thursday,

3rd September at 4 pm,

Marta Porniece Kumar talks to Dr. Robert H.S. Kraus about his transfer from Principal Investigator in Science to Project Manager in Industry.

“I studied biology in Frankfurt, Germany, with a major in Ecology and Evolution. I graduated with a PhD from Wageningen University, The Netherlands, on the subject of duck evolution and genomics in light of the spread of Avian Influenza. After a postdoc phase in applied conservation genetics in Germany I started a research group at the Max Planck Institute of Ornithology (now called MPI of Animal Behavior), with a core interest in ecology and evolution of waterbirds as wildlife disease vectors at the intersection between ecology, genomics, and immunology. After nearly six years heading the group “Disease Ecology and Evolutionary Genetics” I switched to industry to follow a completely new path. Science had left me with little focused perspectives, although I enjoyed it very much and continue to enjoy it as much as I can. I am project manager at a company in document management systems and digitalization. Experience from my scientific life was not only topical knowledge such as ecology or genomics, but all the many soft skills about management and also technical skills in informatics. In this interview I hope to highlight that as a scientist you have much more to offer to corporate life than just the supposedly specialized knowledge of your focused discipline. On the other hand, industry is so different from academia, and I will also highlight pros and cons between these two.” @rhskraus / https://twitter.com/rhskraus

The Career Evolution Web Series: From Science2Industry is offered by the Industry Track of the Planck Academy in collaboration with the PhDnet and PostdocNet of the Max Planck Society.

It particularly addresses PhDs, Postdocs and Research Group Leaders but is also open to any interested party of the Max Planck Community and its friends.
