The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which - like the sun - generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within the research unit MHD a position for a Postdoctoral Theoretical Plasma Physicist (m/f/d).

Your tasks

  • Theoretical formulation and numerical implementation of gyrokinetic models for studies of multi-harmonic nonlinear simulations
  • Contribution to the development and optimization of the TRIMEG code
  • Publication and communication of scientific results
  • Participation in the general tasks of research unit and the collaborating divisions/institutes

Your profile

  • Completed studies (Master/University) and a doctorate in physics, mathematics, computational science and engineering or a related discipline
  • Experience in the theoretical and numerical studies of tokamak plasmas
  • Good programming skills
  • Good publication record with respect to the time since graduation
  • Good communication skills, fluent in spoken and written English
  • Of advantage is experience in the following areas: kinetic models for plasma physics, non-linear simulations, unstructured meshes, finite element methods, Particle-In-Cell algorithms, programming experience with Fortran and/or Matlab

The position is limited to 2 years. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 13 according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund).
