ASDEX Upgrade

The ASDEX Upgrade divertor tokamak went into operation at Garching in 1991.

The aim of ASDEX Upgrade, the "Axially Symmetric Divertor Experiment", is to prepare the physics base for ITER and DEMO. For this purpose essential plasma properties, primarily plasma density, plasma pressure and the wall load, are matched to the conditions in a future fusion power plant.

ASDEX Upgrade fusion device – start a virtual visit!

The spectacular 360-degree panorama is leading you right at the site into the plasma chamber of the ASDEX Upgrade fusion research device, where plasmas with temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees are produced. Access is also provided to the periphery of the device accommodating the technical facilities, or to the control room, from which the experiments are monitored.

After starting the panorama you can look, via mouse movement or gyro function on PC, tablet computer resp. smartphone, into every corner and zoom onto every screw. In brief video interludes PhD students at IPP talk about their work places (photographer: Volker Steger).
