General hints

You can plan your trip on the MVV website. The search engine will display travel solutions and generate downloadable maps (in pdf) of the relevant stations. Maps of the full public transportation system can be found at MVV-network-stations.

IPP is located in the northern outskirts of Munich on the U6 line of the underground (U-Bahn). The main gate of the institute is just outside the U-Bahn station "Garching-Forschungszentrum" (Garching research center), which is the last stop on the U6 line. In the station there are indications pointing to the various university departments and institutes of the research center, including IPP.

The second last station on the U6 line is the center of Garching, where we shall have our conference dinner Monday evening, at Restaurant Rondell.

Continuing backward on the U6 line you can find the "Garching-Hochbrück" station which is in front of Motel One. You can actually see the hotel from the U-Bahn platform.

You can use the U6 line to reach the city center.

In addition to the U-Bahn lines, you will find metropolitan trains called S-Bahn. They are managed by different companies, but as far as the traveller is concerned, there is no difference: the same type of ticket is valid for both U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and city buses.

On the other hand, fares are based on a system of rings and zones that might not be so obvious the first time. The search engine will tell you which ticket is appropriate for your trip.

Here you can find a few suggestions.

From the airport

Garching is actually not far from the airport, but it is not directly connected. The straightforward way to reach Garching is going downtown by the S-bahn (either S1 or S8 lines) up to "Marienplatz" and then back to Garching by the U6. Faster options are possible, but require more changes.

TICKET : For this trip we recommend the "Single-Tageskarte Gesamtnetz". This is the daily ticket valid for the whole network. It will allow you to travel freely in case you want to visit the city. On the other hand, if you just want to reach the Hotel the "Einzelfahrkarte 4 Zonen" is enough, but the "Tageskarte" gives you more freedom.

From the main train station

Several options are available. One possibility is to move to Marienplatz with the S-Bahn and then change to the U6, direction Garching-Forschungszentrum.

TICKET : You need the "Single-Tageskarte XXL". This is a daily ticket which allows you to travel freely between the city and Garching all day. The equivalent single-trip ticket is "Einzelfahrkarte 2 Zonen", but the Tageskarte gives you more freedom in case you want to visit the city.

Everyday life

You will need to use the U-Bahn to reach IPP from the Hotel (two stops from Garching-Hochbrück to Garching Forschungszentrum) and back.

TICKET : In order to have the freedom to move and visit Munich, we suggest you buy the daily ticket "Single-Tageskarte XXL", which is valid for all public transportations in the zones marked in white and green on the map.
